Presidents Putin and Poroshenko “discussed” Grand Prince Vladimir’s role in history – in their respective absences – when two historical dates was commemorated: one thousand years since Prince Vladimir’s death in 1015, and the anniversary of Rus’ Christianization 987/88.
Thus it has recently (15/7) passed a thousand years since the Great Prince of Kievan Rus, Vladimir (or Volodymyr) , died. Both Russia’s and Ukraine’s leaders have spoken about it. Vladimir I was the grand grandson of the Viking chieftain Rurik, according to the old Nestor’s chronicle.
Lenta.ru: “Vladimir Putin spoke about the sources of the unique Russian civilization, and Petro Poroshenko spoke about the monarch’s European choice.
On Tuesday, the anniversary of Rus’ Christianization, President Vladimir Putin and President Petro Poroshenko, in public appearances, went apart in their dealing with Grand Prince Vladimir’s role in history.
‘ Grand Prince Vladimir’s choice was perceptive, and ultimately responsible, and served as a starting point to establish Russia as a unique country within the bounds of civilization … Rus was thus strengthened, and it was growing in power and authority in the eyes of near as well as distant neighbors’, and held talks on equal terms with countries in both East and West … These spiritual roots still today nourish the Slav brother nations of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus‘, said Putin during a solemn reception in the Kremlin on the occasion of one thousand years since Grand Prince Vladimir’s death. At the end of his appearance Putin also greeted his guests with the anniversary of Rus’ Christianization.
‘Vladimir – over a thousand years ago – made not only a religious, but a civilized and truly European choice … Bulgaria and Georgia, Greece, Cyprus, Romania and Serbia have an independent, autocephalous church. In what way does Ukraine differ from them? Why must we be an exception to the rule? ‘- wrote Petro Poroshenko on his Facebook page, where he greeted his followers with the ‘day of Ukraine-Rus’s baptism!’.
In the Ukrainian historical science, the terms ‘Rus-Ukraine’ and ‘Ukraine-Rus’ are accepted as much as the term ‘Kyiv-Rus’ is to the Russian historians “.
