US – and Trump’s – drone attack on Iranian security chief Qasem Soleimani the other day could provide a contemporary illustration of Daniel’s vision about the ram and the goat in Daniel’s eighth chapter:
“Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last.
I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great.
And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes.
And he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran unto him in the fury of his power.
And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand.” – Book of Daniel 8:3 -7
The interpretation of the vision that Daniel received is, that the goat is Greece, and the ram is Media and Persia, or Iran. The goat comes from the west, “without touching the ground”. This seems to be more true about Donald Trump than about Alexander the Great.
But it also says that “ there was no power in the ram to stand ” before the goat.
The night before yesterday the “ram” struck back with a missile attack on several US targets in Iraq, according to news media reports.
The prophecy indeed has great bearing on historical events, as the apocryphal book of the Maccabees portrays, when Antiochus Epiphanes comes to power – one of the four descendants of ”the goat”.
But the Lord Jesus does not interpret Daniel as if the part that speaks of “the abomination of desolation”, when the temple is defiled – Matt. 24:15 ff – would have taken place once and for all. He tells his disciples that this will happen in the future, in even greater scale.
There may be other parts in the visions of Daniel and other prophets, which do not occur only once in history. There is every reason to watch and pray, as the Lord has called for.
The contemporary “goat” may not have four powerful successors, as in Daniel’s vision, but a worldwide mobilization around the country of Israel, and the appearance of the antichrist, is hardly excluded –
